A thing! A thing that I painted! I paint things?!

Jus' Rae paddlin' down the Amazon. Loosely inspired by this song/video: [link]
Rae is from Hero's Journey, that backburner project what barely claws its way past concept-sketch limbo. Shakin' off the rust. I am not dead! But my scanner nearly is. ):

How are you?

edit WHOOPS had the wrong file up there.

Such a cute little scene! I love how bold the colors are.

Thanks! I've noticed that I tend to shy away from bright colors, so that was definitely a thing I was working on here. 8D

I wanted it to resemble certain cartoons, where sometimes only the characters have outlines and the backgrounds are more realistic.

I like how you have the cartoonier outline around Rae while the rest of the piece is more painterly, yet it works together perfectly to set her as the focus and also keep the foreground and background apart. I'm also pretty fascinated at how you have that background texture popping up in the painting on the wall and on the carpeting but it doesn't overpower the other areas of the piece. Is that something you added digitally or just a happy coincidence of the piece.

Also, not gonna lie, I'm super excited that Fever Ray played a part in this because I am deeply in love with Karin Andersson's voice to the point it hurts. Have you listened to the stuff she's done with her brother as The Knife? I am kind of obsessed with them and have nobody to babble on about this with.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comments! This is all traditional, no post editing except to make the scan look as much like the original as I could. I was really inspired by various cartoons with textured, painterly, realistic background art and flatter/more stylized characters. Wrangling this much texture is hard for me and some of the success is just happily accidental. I think the important thing to remember is to have more contrast between different elements in the scene than there is within any field of texture. Doesn't that sound scholarly?

I think I've only heard one The Knife song but I am definitely interested in hearing more. I also LOOOVE her voice and I love what Fever Ray stuff I've heard. Been putting off buying the album, but some day I will MAKE IT MINE.

Yeah, live the dream!
Your Pirate Manta Ray has the best of names. I used to have a stuffed snake a lot like the one in this picture. : D
