HJ: Through the Dark by JeyBarnes HJ: Through the Dark by JeyBarnes
Those who hang around my sketchjournal have put up with my enthusiasm over this idea for a few weeks now. To the rest of you: Surprise! New project. I'm calling it Hero's Journey.

Our protagonist is a young girl named Rae. The story follows the age-old "hero's journey" formula in the vein of things like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars--the quest of an everyperson traveling across far-flung lands and having many strange, frightening, and wondrous encounters along the way.

On her journey Rae meets Dingo, an unhinged but well-meaning fugitive who has escaped a tyrant's dungeon. Rae promises to help him search for a key that will unlock the cumbersome shackle around his neck.

A magic-wielding creature named Robin appears at key points along the way and helps Rae with clues, useful items, and advice.

Eventually Rae and Dingo meet the child prince Petya, and find that the fate of the world hinges on his salvation.

REALLY, this started as an excuse to have an alternate universe in which just about any of my characters could pop up (largely inspired by Kingdom Hearts, which somehow managed to have Winnie the Pooh and Squall from FFVII in the same story without seeming totally surreal). It is entirely just-for-fun and the cliche/vague-ness of the story is a non-issue.
Rae is sort of a composite of what I've looked like at different stages of life, though personality-wise she's more her own person. Robin is based on my old imaginary friend.
If you want to read more behind-the-scenes type stuff, check my sketchjournal. (I friends-only it 'cause I'm shy, but I'll add pretty much any commenter!)

More illustrations sooner than later!

Thank you! It's a project I started that brings together ALL of my characters (and some of my friends' characters) together in a fantasy setting, including ones from dramatically different backgrounds and stories. Basically I use it to have fun with alternate-universe designs and to explore the archetypes that my characters fit. It's a lot of fun. : D

Thanks again! I actually want to present it as though it's concept art for a video game. I even want to design a logo! Hopefully over winter break I'll find the time and energy.

I like how you designed fugitive - he looks kinda lost, shy and oou of place; like Mole (you know Wind in the Willows). I like also the atmopshere of whole picture, very fairytale-like yet dark.

XD this plot actually reminds me of a book called Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman(sp?). Its a good read you should check it out!

And actually now that I think about it the plots aren't that similar, they just include a little girl, a grown man, an alternat universe, and an epic journey through it. XD lol

I had to write a story based on the path of the Archetypal hero my freshman year. Although, I've never heard of a story that fits all the criteria.

It's watercolor! There's a smidge bit of colored pencil over that in a few places, too, and the flat black is acrylic paint. Thank you big big much!

i like the idea of a world where everyone fits in - i'd like to do something like that one day, but i dunno what. maybe a surrealist comic or kids book.
i dunno!

anyway - this is lovely, and i want to see more of it!

Yes! There's a definite Alice-y theme to the (non-)story. In fact some of the plot stuff I'm considering is very very Alice-y indeed. I read the book once a long while ago, and I recommend it! Also The Hobbit, which you've probably read, but I happen to be re-reading it now and I'd forgotten all about Tolkien's sense of humor. Aww Tolkien.

BLATHERBLATHER thank you!
